玄真子
Master Xuanzhen · 靜水真人 “the Still-Water Sage”
He arrived on a borrowed boat and never gave it back. Ninety years later the boat is a
mossy roof at the waterline, and he has still not named a successor.
Xuanzhen keeps the ninth terrace and nothing else. He sweeps it himself, feeds the carp
at dusk, and lets the cranes land on the railing when they please. Visitors are neither
welcomed nor turned away — the gate is simply open, and the path is long enough that
only the sincere arrive.
He teaches by refusing to. A disciple who asks for a technique is handed a broom; a
disciple who asks why is handed the broom twice. What they learn instead is the
Listening-Wave Sword Formula, which cannot be written down — the falls give it, and the
falls take it back the moment the mind wanders.
